About Zero Waste Harvest
In developing countries, post-harvest loss of fruits & vegetables is more than 40%. In Bangladesh, the monetary value of this loss is $2 billion US$. The worst affected are marginalized farmers and ultra-poor traders earning less than $5 per day.
This amounts to 16 million tons of food grains annually, enough to feed the entire population for three months (Source – FAO). It compels farmers to sell produce at throwaway prices. Fruits and vegetables that could enhance diets often become unavailable due to spoilage.
The root cause is the inability to store products. Solar cold storage offers a transformative solution. It reduces post-harvest losses and enables fair pricing.
Post-harvest loss contributes to carbon emissions because decomposing produce releases methane — a powerful greenhouse gas. Climate shocks such as flooding, cyclones, and irregular rainfall further damage agriculture.
Solar cold storage safeguards produce during climate shocks, ensures continuous income, improves nutrition, and provides sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable populations.
